Tips for a Happy, Healthy Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside! Just because the winter weather is a little harsh, doesn’t mean your mood has to be. Don’t let the winter blues keep you from enjoying another season of life! Here are some simple little life hacks you can do to boost your mood and have a happy, healthy Winter.

  1. Have a Plan

Exercise naturally boosts your mood, but doesn’t giving yourself some incentive increase your excitement level, too? Plan out your exercise schedule at the start of the week, varying type, duration and location to keep things interesting. Then, reward yourself, like a new workout outfit, when you accomplish what you planned. Research shows that exercising outside can lift your spirits, but if the weather is too harsh, the FITTEAM app has workouts for you!

  1. Eat Uplifting Foods

We all crave fatty, sugary comfort foods, but be weary of the affect highly refined carbs and sugar have on your blood sugar level and mood. Some comfort foods, however, can actually make you feel good from the inside out, especially if they contain mood-boosting nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, good carbohydrates (i.e. whole grains and vegetables), protein, and B vitamins.

Oatmeal is the perfect example. Not only is it high in fiber, it increases serotonin (the feel-good hormone) and it levels our blood sugar.

  1. See the Light

It might not be sunny and 75 out, but when the sun is shining, take advantage. Sunlight exposure (specifically, UVB rays) creates vitamin D in your body which elevates mood by increasing serotonin. It also suppresses melatonin (a hormone that causes drowsiness).

Bundle up and take a walk/job, partake in winter activities like ice skating or sledding, or maybe even just cuddle up with a nice cup of tea and soak it all in!

  1. Invite a Friend

We have the tendency to want to hibernate, ALONE all Winter. However, contrary to some of our furry mammal friends, humans are better off with interaction; we constantly crave companionship. And, sometimes when we’re feeling moody and tired, not really wanting to talk to anyone, is when we benefit from friends the most.

Whether it’s a movie night, lunch with a co-worker, or book club meeting, challenge yourself to be around others even when you may want to. You’ll build more connection, and the positive energy will uplift your mood and outlook, helping you focus on Winter’s wonderfulness.

  1. Chill Out

Muscles repair and grow during recovery. While the chilly winter months are a perfect excuse to spend more time sweating out toxins in your workouts, you can also heal your body with heat, too! Spend some time in a sauna or try a hot yoga class a few times a week for added detox benefits.

An epsom salt bath with lavender essential oil is also an excellent way to de-stress and relax. Your body (and mind) will come back stronger for your next workout.

What are your hacks for staying happy and healthy during the Winter?
