Make your personal brand stand out!
We all know that marketing along with the way a brand advertises can make or break their success. The same goes for your personal brand. Not sure what I mean by personal brand? According digitalmarketing.org, “Personal branding is the practice of marketing people and their careers as brands. It is an ongoing process of developing and maintaining a reputation and impression of an individual, group, or organization (3).” Personal Branding is so important because in its most basic sense it is a reflection of what people think of you and your career/business.
When you are an entrepreneur of any kind, to be successful you need people to trust you, relate to you and see value in you and/or your ideologies. This all comes from your personal branding and the lasting impression it makes. Not sure how to think of yourself as a brand? Below we take a look at how to figure out how to brand yourself, make it awesome and create success.
Mindset: First things first you need to make sure you are in the right mindset. You need to start thinking of yourself as a brand. “What do you wish for people to associate with you when they think of your name? Is there a certain subject matter in which you want to be perceived as an expert or are there general qualities you want linked to your brand? Once you understand how you wish your brand to be perceived, you can start to be much more strategic about your personal brand (2).” It is critical to be authentic not only when asking yourself these questions but the answers. For example, if you want to be known as someone to trust in regard to health and wellness matters you must live a healthy lifestyle. Or if you want to provide financial advice, are your personal finances in order, do you speak from experience? In addition, remaining authentic well also make it easy for your personal brand to come to life.
Purpose: When creating your personal brand, you should outline purpose. What is the purpose or goal of your intentions with you brand? Whatever this purpose may be make sure the all the content you distribute comes back to this purpose. Let’s use the example from before, if you are focusing your brand on health and wellness it might not be wise to share content that would show a conflict such as a night out drinking with friends. Sharing content that does not follow your purpose or intentions could cause confusion in those that follow you that might damage their trust in you or your personal brand.
Consistent: Alongside of your purpose comes the need to be consistent. Always show up. Use all of your social channels to express and showcase your personal brand. It is important to make sure your content is not only consistent in posting quantity but in the content. You want to make sure that your message is the same through all channels. By remaining consistent your content will become valuable and reliable. According to forbes.com “Every tweet you send, every status update you make, every picture you share, contributes to your personal brand
Value: Find a way to provide value and make yourself unique. By creating content always focused on your brand you will create value. If you are able to build this content that is unique and authentic to you this will only elevate your success. Like in our example, if your brand is health and wellness maybe what makes you unique is your “why” or the way you approach your health. It could be anything as long as it is authentic and truly how you approach life.
Interact: It is important to remember that this should not be a one-way street. Not only will interacting with others create interest and respect it can also lead to more recognition. You can also interact with other string brands which could leverage you.
