Finding Balance.

Finding Balance.

We all have heard some variation of the phrases “work-life balance”, “personal time” or even “they have the balancing act down”, but what does finding balance really mean? First, I think we need to realize that “balance” is different for every single person. Everyone has different priorities, values and goals which leads to a very different idea of balance for their life. Regardless of how we may attempt to achieve balance most of us struggle causing increased stress, anxiety and frustration. Knowing this and the negative impacts feeling overwhelmed can have on your health, we take a look into daily practices that can help promote balance no matter what balance may look like to you.

Evaluate & Assess

Looking inward at your life and assessing your feelings is the first step. Success.com ask’s some great questions… “Do you feel physically exhausted, mentally stagnant or find yourself without close relationships? Would you call yourself a workaholic? Do you feel a lack of spiritual alignment? If you answer yes to any of these questions, your life is probably out of balance (1).” Once you have identified your stressors and where you need might need or want more time

Prioritize

Prioritize you healthy, your happiness, your time and your to-do list. “Our overall physical, emotional and mental health should be your main concern. If you struggle with anxiety or depression and think therapy would benefit you, fit those sessions into your schedule, even if you have to leave work early or ditch your evening spin class. If you are battling a chronic illness, don’t be afraid to call in sick on rough days. Overworking yourself prevents you from getting better, possibly causing you to take more days off in the future. (5)” Prioritizing isn’t just about completing tasks for work it’s also about prioritizing yourself to preserve a happier future.

Unplug & Unwind

We are all guilty now a days of being attached to our phone, email, tablet… or whatever electronic device you name. I know you are probably thinking of a million reason you can’t, but you can start slow. Start with a couple hours here and there and use that time to interact with your friends & family, mediate, exercise, read a book or whatever will help you truly relax and recharge. Once you see the benefit and value of disconnecting and becoming present, you’ll gladly start to put away and turn off your electronics.

Avoid Negativity

This might seem intuitive, but negativity may be presenting itself throughout your day without you even noticing. Stay away from people who bring your down or always complain. Avoid what is most likely the biggest critic yourself, try not to talk negatively to yourself. For example turn “ughh I am the worst I can’t believe I wasted time reading and now I can’t get this task done” into “What a great book I am reading, I will reassess the tasks for today to see what can be moved to tomorrow.” Avoid comparing yourself to those you don’t know or see on social media because anyone can appear to have it together but really be fighting their own struggles, and this comparison easily turns into negative toxic self-talk.

Have Fun

Remember to pamper yourself and to have fun. By taking everything too seriously we can miss life sweetest moments. Treat yourself to that spa day or the hike you have been meaning to take, you’ll find that when you are enjoying life and feeling great everything become a little easier. Maybe this means you need a vacation, I think this quote from businessnewdaily.com says it best “”The truth is, there is no nobility in not taking well-deserved time away from work; the benefits of taking a day off far outweigh the downsides,” said Chancey. “With proper planning, you can take time away without worrying about burdening your colleagues or contending with a huge workload when you return. (5)”
